With a population of 391,906 based on the 2010 census, it is the main municipality of the Tulsa Metropolitan Area, a region with 937,478 (2010) residents in the MSA and 988,454 (2010) within the CSA. The CSA of Tulsa is projected to reach one million between 2010 and 2012. The city of Tulsa serves as the county seat of Tulsa County, the most populous county in the state of Oklahoma, and extends into the counties of Osage, Rogers and Wagoners.
The area was initially settled between 1828 and 1836, after an attack by the Lochapoka Band of Creek Native American tribe. It was also the location of the infamous Tulsa Race Riot during the year 1921. This riot was and is still considered among the largest and most devastating race riots within the countries history. For the majority of the 20th century, Tulsa held the nickname "Oil Capital of the World" and played a key role as one of the most important centers for the oil business in the United States. The city of Tulsa, along with some other cities, claims to be the origin of U.S. Route 66 and is also famous for its Western Swing music.
Tulsa's Gilcrease Museum features American art from colonial times to the present, with an emphasis on western art. Its extensive collection, once owned by Tulsa oil magnate Thomas Gilcrease and bought by the city of Tulsa in the year 1955, consists of 10,000 paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures by 400 artists. Of the 22 bronzes of Frederic Remington, 18 could be seen here. Other Tulsa cultural attractions and museums comprise the Fenster Museum of Jewish Art, the Philbrook Museum of Art and the Tulsa Air and Space Center. Tulsa is home to the Tulsa Zoo and the Oklahoma Aquarium. Mayfest is a 4-day outdoor arts and music festival which attracts 250,000 individuals every year.
Even though the oil business has historically dominated the city's economy, efforts in economic diversification have created a base in the sectors of aerospace, finance, technology, telecommunications, manufacturing and high tech. The Tulsa International Airport (TUL) as well as the Tulsa Port of Catoosa, the nation's most inland seaport, connect the area with global transportation and trade. A lot of international gas and oil-related businesses have headquarters in the city of Tulsa, including SemGroup, Williams Companies, ONEOK, Syntroleum, Excel Energy and Samson. Meanwhile, there are 30 businesses within Tulsa that employ more than 1,000 people, though small businesses make up more than 80% of Tulsa's companies.
