Beaumont City sits around thirty miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico and is situated on the coastal plane south of the dense pine forests of East Texas. The area was first settled by Noah and Nancy Tevis in the year 1824. They built a farm on the west bank of the Neches River. A small community started to grow around the farm and was eventually named Neches River or Tevis Bluff Settlement. Joseph P. Pulsifer, Thomas B. Huling and Henry Millard purchased the small community together with the nearby community of Santa Anna during 1835 with the intention of planning a town. It was named after Mary Dewburleigh Barlace Warren Beaumont, the late wife of Henry Millard, who passed away during the year 1834.

Lamar University is situated in Beaumont City and presently hosts about 15,000 students. The city's daily newspaper is The Beaumont Enterprise, and The Examiner is published once a week.

The Port of Beaumont represents a significant element of the region's financial system. It is presently the biggest seaport by Tonnage and the second largest military seaport in the globe. Stationed at the port are both the 596th Transportation Group and the 842nd Transportation Battalion.

There are numerous businesses which have their head offices located within Beaumont. Presently, Jason's Deli and Conn's Appliances are a couple of the largest. The Sweet Leaf Tea Company headquarters was first located in the city of Beaumont but relocated to Austin in the month of October 2003. Until it's absorption by Entergy Corporation during the year 1993, Gulf States Utilities also had its head office there. GSU's Edison Plaza remains the tallest building in the city of Beaumont.

The South Texas State fair has been held in the city of Beaumont ever since the year 1907 and has just relocated to its new location in Ford Park.
