Winston-Salem City serves as the seat of Forsyth County. The city is located 100 miles west of Raleigh, the capital of the state, and approximately 80 miles northeast of Charlotte. The city of Winston-Salem is serviced by U.S. Routes 52 and 421, Interstate I-40 and State Highway 8.

Salem the town was first founded in the year 1766, when it first served as a congregational site for the Moravian church. Entrepreneurial activity and trading grew quickly as the town grew into a major economic hub. The adjacent town of Winston was established during the year 1849 and named in tribute to Joseph Winston, a local Revolutionary War hero. Both Winston and Salem became prominent centers in the newly created Forsyth County, with burgeoning ventures within the furniture, textile and tobacco markets. By the latter part of the 1850s, the two towns were connected to form Winston-Salem. Amongst the world's biggest tobacco companies, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, started in Winston-Salem during the year 1874. Since that time, the Reynolds family has played a major role in the city's development. During the early part of the twentieth century, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts started its very first store within Winston-Salem and Piedmont Airlines established head office there.

Medical research is currently a prominent industry within Winston-Salem. The city's largest business is Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Other company head offices located in Winston-Salem City include Branch banking and Trust Company, TW Garner Food Company, Reynolda manufacturing Solutions, Hanes Brands Inc., Lowes Foods Stores, Southern Community Bank and ISP Sports. Winston-Salem Cit is part of the Piedmont Triad Research Park where numerous biomedical and information technology research and development facilities are located. Finance and banking are essential to the city's economy also.

Winston-Salem has several post-secondary institutions, including Salem College, Wake Forrest university and Winston-Salem University.

In 1949, Winston-Salem City was able to establish the nation's first local arts council. Therefore, together with the number of art-related attractions, the city of Winston-Salem has been known as the "City of the Arts." The city of Winston-Salem is home to Twin City Stage, Winston-Salem Theater Alliance, the Piedmont Opera Theater, the Winston-Salem Symphony, the Sawtooth Center for Visual Arts, University of North Carolina School of the Arts and the Stevens center for the performing Arts. Art enthusiasts could go to a lot of galleries within the city's art district at Trade and Sixth streets.
