It is the county seat of Shasta County, California and is also, the biggest city in the Shasta Cascade region. The city of redding is the 4th biggest city in the Sacramento Valley after Roseville, Sacramento and Elk Grove, California.

Initially, the town of Redding served as a trade and travel route which connected the Pacific Northwest to California's Central Valley. The city of Redding is situated along the Siskiyou Trail. From around the year 1000, the area of Redding was occupied by Native Americans of the Wintu tribe. During the start of the 19th century, trappers from the Hudson's Bay Company, along with members of the United States Exploring Expedition traveled through the location of Redding as they traversed the Siskiyou Trail.

Redding is located at the very northwestern end of the Central Valley. This region transitions into the Cascade foothills. The city is surrounded by gorgeous mountains towards the west, east and towards the north. There is abundant and fertile farmland found to the south. Some of the outermost portions of the city are really a part of the Cascade foothills. Central and southern regions of the city are located in the Sacramento Valley.

Redding is the biggest city within the Northern Sacramento Valley. Moreover, it is the biggest city on the 470 mile or 756 km stretch of Interstate 5 between Eugene, Oregon and Sacramento, California. The city of Redding had a significantly lower population during 2010 though of 177,223 that was a lot less compared to Medford Oregon's population of 203,206. Redding along with its southern neighbor Red Bluff is both famous tourist spots because lots of tourists use these cities as bases to explore natural attractions within the region like Lake Shasta and Lassen Volcanic National Park.

The Sundial Bridge situated at Turtle Bay was finished in 2004. This exciting pedestrian span was designed by a noted Spanish architecht-engineer-artist, Santiago Calatrava. The bridge links the north and south campuses of the 1.2 km2 or 300 acre Turtle Bay Exploration Park. The pylon that holds up the bridge support cables also becomes a sundial that is only accurate in the summer solstice of June 21st or 22nd. The park offers spectacular sprawling gardens which stretch over 20 acres and a museum. The campus features changing and permanent exhibitions. Some of the exhibitions focus on art, natural science, horticulture, history and forestry.

The historic Cascade Theatre initially opened during 1935. It has just been restored and operates to this day as multi-use performance place. On the 5th of November, 1999 it was listed on the California Register of Historic Resources and the theatre represents an example of Art Deco architecture. On the 17th of January, the year 2002, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On March 18, 2000, the theatre was also a recipient of the Art Deco Society of California Preservation Award.
