Albuquerque City was founded as the Spanish colonial outpost of Ranchos de Albuquerque during the year 1706. At that time, 18 families resided within the region. There are lots of the historical Spanish cultural heritage in Albuquerque today.

The region originally served as a farming community along the Camino Real. In time, the town became more of a military outpost. At one time, the city was considered the sheep-herding capital of the West. In 1706, Spain established a military garrison or a "presidio" in the village. Mexico also had a military garrison situated there after the year 1821. The township was originally built in the conventional pattern of a Spanish village: houses, government buildings and a church all surrounded a central plaza.

Albuquerque presently sits in the New Mexico Technology Corridor, that is a selection of government institutions and private high-tech companies that operate along the Rio Grande. There are several big companies that contribute to the population with their numerous personnel like Kirtland Air Force Base and Sandia National Laboratories.

The somewhat remote Corridor is able to bring in numerous highly skilled personnel by the attendant contracting businesses. Like for example, in suburban Rio Rancho, Intel operates a large semi-conductor factory, likewise known as a "fab," and its attendant huge capital investment is found within neighboring Sandoval County. Tempur-Pedic is located next to I-40 on the West Mesa and Northrop Grumman is situated within northeast Albuquerque along I-25.

In the late 1960s, the architectural design innovator and solar energy guru Steve Baer situated his business Zomeworks to the region. The Sandia and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Los Alamos National Laboratory cooperate here in an endeavor that originated with the Manhattan Project.

In January 2007, Tempur-Pedic opened up an 800,000 square foot mattress factory in northwest Albuquerque. In the year 2008, Schott Solar Inc. announced they will open up a 200,000 square foot facility that specializes in manufacturing receivers for CSPs or concentrated solar thermal power plants, along with 64MW of photovoltaic or PV modules.
