Oregon has a population of 3.8 million, much of which is concentrated in the cities located in the valley of the Willamette River inside western Oregon. The population of the city of Portland is 583,776.
Crater Lake National Park is the state's only national park. Crater Lake is amongst the world's deepest lakes.
Deposits of lake sediment on the valley floor provided by Glacial Lake Missoula within western Montana feed the fertile region of the Willamette Valley. Oregon State is a leading wine-producing area with over 300 wineries. Wine production has been a substantial trade for approximately forty years. The region has similar weather and soil qualities to those found within the Burgundy and Alsace regions of France. Cranberry production is situated along the Southern shoreline covering approximately 27,000 acres in northern Curry and southern Coos counties, all-around Bandon.
Dry and irrigated land wheat is grown within the northeastern region of Oregon, specifically around Pendleton. The state likewise produces cattle, dairy products, eggs, sheep and poultry.
Oregon was once one of the nation's main producers of timber because of its extensive forests. Several factors have contributed to a steep decline in the amount of timber harvested from federal lands. Forest fires, over-harvesting and legal struggles over management of federal holdings have reduced production of timber.
