The city of Rockford is usually known as "The Forest City" by its residents. During the year 1834, Rockford was founded by Germanicus Kent who called it Midway, as it was roughly in the middle between Chicago and his hometown of Galena. During 1852 Rockford officially became a city with a growing population thanks to the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad, which ran through it.
