New York has a maritime border with the state of Rhode Island east of Long Island. The state of New York shares an international border along with Canada to the west and north, which makes Canada an essential economic partner in terms of tourism and exports. Canada receives the largest share of total worldwide exports. Canadians spend close to $500 million per year while visiting New York.
New York City attract millions of visitors from all around North America and the rest of the world. The city is a major center for culture, finance, manufacturing and transportation. New York City is home of the New York Stock Exchange, the largest stock exchange in the world by dollar volume. Numerous major corporations have their head office here. The city played an important role in the development of the nation as the gateway for immigration to the U.S.
Upstate New York has a concentration of manufacturing industries which produce garments, printed products, railroad equipment, bus line vehicles and fur. Microchip manufacturing and nanotechnology occurs within Hudson Valley and Albany. Manufacture of photographic imaging and equipment takes place within the Rochester area. various products of New York include electric equipment, scientific instrument, machinery and chemical products. The state of New York is a main agricultural producer generating over $3 billion in agricultural products from farmland that covers approximately one quarter of its total land area. Major products include cattle and other livestock, dairy, nursery stock, vegetables, apples and maple syrup. No other state produces as much cabbage as the state of New York.
New York's economy is larger than most independent countries, ranking 16th behind Turkey as the biggest economy within the world. $46,364 is the average per capita income.
New York's exports totaled $71.1 billion during the year 2007. Exports comprise computers and electronics, foodstuffs, commodities, minerals, cut diamonds and auto parts. Other than Canada, its largest markets for exports are Switzerland, the UK, Hong Kong and Israel.
