The larger metropolitan area has 2.1 million people.
Kansas City is located at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, opposite the city of Kansas, Kansas. It was founded as a township in 1838 and was incorporated as a city during 1850. KC was the site of the Battle of Westport and several other Civil War battles. Kansas City played a vital part in the history of jazz and blues.
The first European to go to the area and explore the lower Missouri River was Etienne de Veniard, Sieur de Bourgmont. At the time, he served as a commander at the French's Fort Detroit. He left his post after being criticized for his handling of Native American affairs. A deserter, he evaded authorities, became a fur trader and took a Native American wife.
The Greater Kansas area is home to lots of Fortune 500 companies like Hallmark Cards. Also in the city are the head offices of YRC Worldwide Inc., Sprint Nextel Corporation, H&R Block and International Assets Holding Corporation. Other companies situated there comprise Aquila, Great Plains Energy, Applebee's, AMC Theatres, DST Systems, Cerner, Russell Stover candies and Garmin International. Three international law businesses are also based in the city of Kansas.
Agriculture is vital to the Kansas City economy. The city is home to Dairy Farmers of America, the biggest Dairy Co-op within the country.
There are numerous lakes in the region surrounding KC. These lakes offer lots of recreational opportunities like for example fishing, swimming, camping and boating. Popular spots are Lewis and Clark Lake, roughly 45 minutes north of the city, and Big Lake State Park, further north. Stockton Lake at Stockton State Park is popular for scuba diving and is situated 160 km southeast of the city.
