Immigrants from Germany were attracted to the city and influenced its culture, especially its architecture and food. Paper production and iron works were two key industries that boomed within the city of Hamilton from the early to mid-20th century.

In 1913, much of Hamilton was destroyed during the Great Dayton Flood. The township later was called "Little Chicago" because numerous Chicago gangsters purchased houses in Hamilton. During the second World War, Hamilton factories made supplies for the war. However, military personnel were forbidden to enter Hamilton on account of the numerous prostitution and gambling establishments that had taken root there.

Nowadays Hamilton visitors and residents benefit from the city's numerous parks. Outdoor activities take place within Miami Woods, Joyce Park, Sanders Park, Milkin Woods and Crawford Woods.
