On the city's west border is the Puget Sound, while the city of Tacoma is south, the town of Des Moines in the north, and unincorporated King County, Milton and Kent in the east. The city of Federal Way is around 37 km south of Seattle.
Federal Way was just recently incorporated in the year 1990. It was an area and community which was largely dependent upon logging. It was referred to as "Federal Way" after Federal Highway U.S. 99, that was built through the area to be able to connect Everett and Seattle with Tacoma. The city's Chamber of Commerce assumed the name during the early 1950s.
Situated in the city of Federal Way, is the biggest softwood timber company in the globe, Weyerhaeuser. The corporation has allowed a lot of its land to be utilized for public use. The United States headquarters of World Vision are situated in Federal Way.
The city of Federal Way boasts numerous parks and playgrounds, whereas one of the most important recreational landmarks is the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. It played host to the 1990 Goodwill Games. Celebration Park is one more important recreation facility, featuring trails and sports fields.
The largest amusement park within the region, the Wild Waves Theme Park, makes its home in Federal Way. The park was purchased during 2007 by Parc Management LLC of Jacksonville, Florida, for over $30 million.
The city of Federal Way has numerous semi-urban development features, landscaped off-street shopping centers and multi-structure apartment complexes. Federal Way has just one indoor shopping center, Commons at Federal Way, situated on S 320th St. and Pacific Hwy South near the city's main Interstate 5 exit. A recent multi-use development is United Properties' "Symphony" project. This major downtown redevelopment project features four 15-22 story towers comprising 900 housing units, 5,600 m2 of office and retail space, and a large park. The development is constructed on the property of the previous AMC Theatres cinema and is convenient to the transit center of the city.
