The city of Grand Prairie has a very convenient, central location between Dallas and Fort Worth. Dallas lies only 12 miles east of downtown and the city of Fort Worth is located 15 miles west. There are 58 parks within the city totaling an area of roughly 5,000 acres. In these parks are five softball and baseball complexes, a senior centre, five public swimming pools, 32 tennis courts, two beaches on Joe Pool Lake, a campground, and 18 soccer fields. The city has a number of competitive athletic programs.

Grand Prairie City has established a 1/4 sales tax that is put towards park improvements. With this 20-year, $125 million plan Grand Prairie aims to improve each and every park while continuing to expand and add more park land.

Grand Prairie City has two great public golf courses, though there are various private golf courses and a country club within the city. The Tangle Ridge Golf Course is famous for its great atmosphere of Hill County and bentgrass greens. The largest practice putting green within Texas can be found at Prairie lakes, that has one of the very best golf values within the region.

The top employers in the city of Grand Prairie, as of the year 2008, are: Grand Prairie Independent School District, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, Bell Helicopter-Textron, Poly-America, Inc., Grand Prairie City, Vought Aircraft Industries and Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie.

The famous amusement park Six Flags runs its corporate office in the city of grand Prairie. The head office for American Eurocopter is likewise located within Grand Prairie.

American Airlines decided to relocate from New York City to the Dallas/Fort Worth area in 1978. They moved their head office into two leased office buildings in Grand Prairie. The move to the city of Fort Worth was completed when the airline left its Grand Prairie facility on January 17, 1983.
