The University of Georgia is within this college township and truly responsible for the initial growth of Athens. In nineteen ninety one, after a successful vote the year before, the original city abandoned its charter and decided to form a unified government together with nearby Clarke County. The new area was known collectively as Athens-Clarke County. According to the 2010 Census, the consolidated city county had a total population of around 115,452. This combined population included all of Athens-Clarke County minus a portion of Bogart and Winterville.

Athens, Georgia was first a trading settlement set up along the banks of Oconee River. The area went by the name Cedar Shoals in the late 1700s. On the 27th of January, the year 1875, the Georgia General Assembly chartered the University of Georgia as the first chartered state-supported university. Abraham Baldwin drafted the charter which existed solely on paper for 16 years.

In the summer of the year 1801, a delegation of 5 men: Hugh Lawson, John Milledge, John Twiggs, George Walton and Baldwin traveled to was called Jackson County to pick a location for the future university and likewise secure a contract for its construction. Unanimously, the delegation agreed on the property location on the hill above Cedar Shoals and the Oconee River. On July 25, 1801, Daniel Easley sold six hundred thirty three acres to Milledge and after that donated it to the university. The land was named Athens to honor the Greek city which was the center of learning and culture during ancient times.

The Athens-Clarke County is spread out over roughly 125 square miles, that is the smallest area for any of the 159 counties within Georgia.
