The region of Baton Rouge is known as the "Capital Area." It is located in the southeast region of Louisiana along the Mississippi River. The town owes its historical importance to its site located at Istrouma Bluff. This is the first bluff upriver from the Mississippi River Delta. It serves the community by protecting the people of the city from hurricanes, flooding and other natural disasters from nature. Baton Rouge City also has constructed a levee system in addition to this natural barrier. This levee system protects the low-lying agricultural regions and the riverfront because it stretches southward.
The population of the city of Baton Rouge is around 230,000 according to the 2010 census. The metropolitan area, called Greater Baton Rouge, has a population of around 802,500 people as of 2010.
The history of the city of Baton Rouge can be traced back to the year 1699. The European-American history started when a French explorer, Sieur d'lberville was leading an exploration party up the Mississippi River. He saw a reddish colored cypress pole that was covered with bloody animals, serving to mark the boundary between the Houma and Bayou Goula hunting grounds. They referred to site and the pole "le bāton rouge," that translates to "the red stick."
The site had been named "Istrouma" by the local Native Americans. Proof has been found along the Amite, Comite and Mississippi rivers and in 3 Native American mounds which remain within the city. Archaeologists have been able to determine indigenous habitation of the area to 8000 BC. These mounds were built during the Middle Archaic period by gatherer-hunter societies maybe as early as 4500 BC that is long before the Egyptian pyramids were built.
The biggest business in Baton Rouge is petrochemical manufacturing and production. The Exxon Mobil facility within the city is the 2nd largest oil refinery in the United States and is also among the world's ten largest. There are lots of pipeline, deep water, and rail and highway access within Baton Rouge too.
Albermarle has their head office within the city of Baton Rouge, while the Dow Chemical Company has a big plant near Plaquemine in Iberville Parish. NanYa Technology Corporation has a large facility making CPVC and PVC pipes within North Baton Rouge. Various companies such as Shaw Construction, Harmony and Turner all started by performing construction work at these facilities.
