 Lift Truck Chain Hampton - The city of Hampton, Virginia is located in the southeast part of the state and is considered an independent city since it is not part of any particular county. Located on the southeastern end of the Virginia Peninsula, Hampton is amongst the 7 main cities that make up the Hampton Roads metropolitan area.
The city of Hampton is situated on the Hampton Roads Beltway. It is home to the HRBT or the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel that is situated on Interstate 64. This particular bridge-tunnel serves as the gateway to Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean from the eastern United States and its tributary rivers. It was first opened in the year 1957 and was the world's very first bride-tunnel. This gateway is the largest ice-free harbor in the US. The HRBT was expanded during the 1970s. Even today, this facility is the deepest and the busiest in the state of Virginia.
The city of Hampton is considered amongst the earliest settlements within the United States, as it could trace its earliest origins back to the early part of the 1600s. The town was a quiet trading post prior to the Civil War. During 1861, the region was part of the conflict, when the Confederate army burned the city of Hampton to the ground, attempting to stop the take over of the township by the Union troops. Out of the remains left after that, former slaves who were under a degree of Union protection, built the Grand Contraband Camp. This particular camp was the very first self-contained African American community in the nation.
During the year 1952, Hampton received city status following a municipal consolidation. This consolidation resulted in the City of Hampton incorporating the boundaries of an area previously referred to as Elizabeth City County.
Hampton is a city with a lot of activities to both see and do. There are several recreational, historical and cultural attractions. Like for example, The Virginia Air & Space Center is the official visitor center for the Langley Research Center of NASA. Visitors could truly enjoy a virtual reality video on the pioneers of flying in a state-of-the-art set up. They could also see the Apollo 12 Command Capsule that journeyed to the moon.
The Hampton University Museum is situated on amongst the oldest African-American universities in the US. Initially, the University was the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. Their objective was to be able to educate black men and women who were set free and teach them skills and trades after the Civil War ended. In addition, the location is the place where the Emancipation Proclamation was read by Lincoln and is referred to as Emancipation Oak.
Located within historic downtown, the Hampton History Museum offers the history of the city. There are costumed interpreters available to re-enact the context and the significance of many of the exhibits. One more famous tourist attraction is the Casemate Museum located at Fort Monroe. This is the biggest stone fort ever to be made in the nation. The Museum is among the major attractions and chronicles the role of the Fort during the Civil War. It also contains the cell which imprisoned Jefferson Davis, the Confederate President.
Another downtown place is the Charles H. Taylor Arts Center. This structure was built during the year 1925 and served as the public library for the city of Hampton for over 60 years. The building has gone through significant renovation and restoration. Now, it presents changing exhibitions of the very best local, regional and national artists.
