Rapid commercial and residential development even occurred in the southwestern and northwestern areas of the city. Now, the City of London is considered as the 11th largest urban area within Canada and the 6th largest city within Ontario.
London has its creative roots planted really early in its history, and over the years, it has produced a lot of Canadian talents both in the performing and visual arts. Among the more distinguished ones include: dancers Evelyn Hart, Jack Chambers and the late Greg Curnoe, actor Ryan Gosling, musician Guy Lombardo, and Oscar-winning director and screenplay writer Paul Haggis. London Arts Council is committed to enhancing creative vitality and quality of life through its great programs and services which offer educational, informational, and networking opportunities to Londoners, visitors, as well as the Arts community. Museum London provides numerous collections of regional Canadian works and more than 25,000 artifacts that reflect London's artifacts. Orchestra London gives distinctive classical and inspirational music performances and various orchestrated music. The Mabile Choirs of London and the London Youth Symphony are also well-known in the city. There are two well-known art houses at London, one is the McIntosh Gallery, an art gallery on the UWO campus, and the Open House Arts Collective, that promotes cultural activities in the city. The London Public Library has author readings and art exhibitions, and the Writers Resource Center is the place of the Canadian Poetry Association (London Chapter).
London is home to many attractions and annual festivals, comprising the Taste of London Festival, London International Hot Air Balloon Festival, London Ribfest (2nd largest rib festival within North America), the Expressions in Chalk Street Painting Festival, Home County Folk Festival, Pride London Festival (amongst the largest Pride festivals in Ontario), London Fringe Theatre Festival, Sunfest (a World Music festival and the 2nd biggest within Canada), and the London Ontario Live Arts Festival.
The city of London has an economy that is dominated by information technology, military vehicles, locomotive, and insurance businesses. The city is the birthplace of London Life Insurance Company and General Motors' Electro-Motive Division. General Dynamics Land Systems makes armoured personal carriers within the city. The city of London has a strong life sciences and biotechnology related research; and much of this is spurred by the University of Western Ontario. The university brings in roughly C$1.5 billion to the London financial system each year. 3M's head office are likewise located within London, and Labatt and Carling Breweries are established here. Kellogg's Company likewise has a plant within the city of London, and is considered to have the most technologically-advanced manufacturing amenities in the company.
