In El Paso City, there are three main school districts; The Ysleta Independent School District, the Socorro Independent School District and The El Paso Independent School District. The city has within its school districts, 101 public elementary schools, 33 middle/junior high schools, 22 high schools, 8 specialty schools, 3 adult learning centers, and a couple of alternative schools. There is also an an academy of science and technology, an international language school, an early childhood center, and an entrepreneur center. There are 50 private schools and over 25 parochial schools within the city. Among the private schools in this region are renowned for their academic quality and have been recognized as the country's best. St. Clement's Episcopal Parish School and Loretto Academy are two schools which have been given the prestigious Blue Ribbon award. There are two other private schools within El Paso City that provide specialized mechanical, academic or technical education.
Within the regions of El Paso and Jaurez, there are two major educational centers. These are recognized for their academic diversity to help make sure that the students become more well-rounded people. The most prominent institutions in the region are New Mexico State University, the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Phoenix and the El Paso Community College. In addition to these schools, there are some other excellent options like the University of Phoenix, the Howard Payne University, the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso and Webster University.
The city's economy is largely based off of global trade due to its proximity to the border of Mexico. It is among the biggest sources of employment within the area. Roughly half of the top 20 companies are government-related, like the United States Department of Justice. Manufacturing is one more essential trade for El Paso's economy. The apparel and textile industry that the city used to be renowned for is currently going through a downward spiral, although production of electronics, computers and rubber and plastic products continue to increase. Over the years, several Fortune 500 companies have operated out of El Paso City.
