American Indians initially inhabited the area approximately 4,000 years ago, or longer. Archaeological evidence dating back approximately 10,000 years has been unearthed around Broward County. The economy of Pembroke Pines is quite similar to that of most other South Florida cities that are heavily dependent upon tourism. The median family income within Pembroke Pines was $69,267 in 2005, higher than both the Florida average ($50,465) and the national average ($55,832).
