According to the Census of the year 2010, Hartford's population was 124,775, making it the 7th largest city in New England. It is the 2nd most densely inhabited city located on the Connecticut River, that is the largest river within New England. Hartford ranks Connecticut's 3rd largest city, coming in after the coastal cities of New Haven and Bridgeport. With a population of about 1,212,400, Greater Hartford was the biggest metropolitan area within the state of Connecticut, based on the census of the year 2010.
Dutch explorer Adriaen Block, visited the region in 1614. Soon after, trade was set up at Good Hope or Fort Goede Hoop, by the New Netherland colony. This fort was situated at the confluence of the Park and Connecticut Rivers. It was established in the year 1623 but the fur traders ended up abandoning their post by the year 1654. Now, the area near the location is still called Dutch Point.
The very first English settlers began to come to the region during the year 1635. The settlement was initially called Newtown until the year 1637, when it was renamed Hartford. This name was selected to honor Samuel Stone's home, one of the first settlers, who came from Hertford, an English town.
Hartford has the reputation of being the "Insurance capital of the world." It is the home and headquarters base for many major insurance businesses, though some of the insurance companies have relocated or moved a part of their operations to cities situated close-by within the Hartford area, together with various locations. Another key component of the local economy is made up by the Finance sector. Due to the Supreme Court, the state capital building and the legislature being located in Hartford, the government offers another important economic factor.
