The area along the Fox River where it empties into the city of Green bay became a natural stopping place for the French voyagers, woodland Indian tribes, fur trappers and Jesuit missionaries as far back as the 17th century. In the year 1634, this are became Wisconsin's very first settlement, 14 years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock.

The area was originally settled by the French, prior to being driven out during the year 1763 by the British. The British maintained the region until after the war of the year 1812. This region was a major fur trading center. The fur trading industry had given way to lumbering by the time Wisconsin obtained its statehood during 1848. During the year 1895, the first paper mill was constructed. This established a staple business that is currently still a strong part of the economy.

The borough of Green Bay was formed in 1838 and later consolidated together with Fort Howard in 1895 to make the City of Green Bay. The city's meat packing industry of the 1920s provided a name for the local football team who was known as the Green Bay Packers. Eventually, they became 1 of 2 charter teams of the NFL or also known as National Football League.

Green Bay's most prominent businesses include manufacturing, healthcare, accommodation and food services, the arts, educational services, recreation and entertainment. Integral parts of the economy comprise meat packing plants and the paper business and its associated industries.
