 Lift Truck Chain Shreveport - Shreveport, Louisiana serves as the seat of Caddo Parish though part of the city boundaries stretch into Bossier Parish. It is the 3rd largest city and part of the 4th biggest metropolitan area in Louisiana: the Shreveport-Bossier City Metropolitan Area with a population of nearly 400,000. Shreveport is situated along the Red River across from the city of Bossier on the other side. The two cities are referred to as "Shreveport-Bossier."
In the region of Shreveport, the states of Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas meet on an area called "Ark-La-Tex".
The town was officially settled by the Shreve Town Company which set up the town at the point of the Red River and the Texas Trail during 1836. The Texas Trail was established by travelers as an overland route to Mexico and then later to Texas. The newly-formed community was named Shreve Town to honor Captain Henry Miller Shreve. The Captain was something of a hero after leading US Army Corps of Engineer efforts to remove a long stretch of debris clogging the river.
Incorporated during the year 1839, the township of Shreveport did not officially become a city until the year 1871. During part of the 20th century, Shreveport played an important role in the national oil industry. When the oil industry faltered in the 1980s, Shreveport's economy declined because of layoffs, company closures and cutbacks. The city then focused its efforts on the service sector by developing riverboat casinos and preserving its historic landmarks. It is presently considered a popular tourist place.
When Shreveport positioned its economy to more of a base in services, there was a boom within the gaming industry. Riverboat gambling casinos helped to provide an important employment and revenue streams within the area. Casinos in Shreveport-Bossier comprise Eldorado Casino, Sam's Town Casino, Horseshoe Casino, Boomtown Casino and Diamond Jacks Casino. The city of Shreveport was Louisiana's 2nd most visited city next to New Orleans (prior to Hurricane Katrina). The region is likewise known for horse racing. A main horse racetrack, Harrah's Louisiana Downs, is located within nearby Bossier City. The Shreveport-Bossier area is a commercial and cultural center. A main shopping and entertainment complex, The Louisiana Boardwalk, is located across the river within the city of Bossier. The Boardwalk is a 51,000 mē facility with restaurants, outlet shopping, bowling complex and movie theater.
