With 6,483,802 residents, Indiana is ranked 16th in population density and 15th in population. The state of Indiana is ranked 38th in land area and is the smallest state in the continental US west of the Appalachian Mountains. Its capital and biggest city is Indianapolis, the second largest of any state capital and biggest state capital east of the Mississippi River.
Before it became a territory, various cultures of indigenous residents and historic Native Americans colonized the state of Indiana for thousands of years. Angel Mounds State Historic Site, amongst the best preserved ancient earthwork mound sites within the country, can be located near Evansville in Southern Indiana.
People of Indiana are referred to as Hoosiers. The origin of the term is disputed, but one hypothesis has "Hoosier" originating from a frontier greeting, a corruption of "Who's here?" The state's name means "Land of the Indians," or simply "Indian Land." This name dates back to at least the 1760s but was first applied to the region by the US Congress when the Indiana Territory was incorporated during the year 1800, separating it from the Northwest Territory.
The labor force of Indiana was 3,084,100 during 2000, helping to provide a total gross state product of $275.7 billion. A big percentage of this output comes in the form of manufacturing. The northwest region of Indiana known as the Calumet area is the biggest steel producing area in the United States Indiana's other manufactures include pharmaceuticals and medical devices, electrical equipment, automobiles, transportation equipment, chemical products, rubber, petroleum and coal products, and factory machinery.
Compared to its Rust Belt neighbors, Indiana's and its reliance on manufacturing has not seen the steep declines in manufacturing. Some factors in the present labor market seem to supply the explanation. First, much of the heavy manufacturing, like steel and industrial machinery, requires highly skilled labor, and firms are often willing to locate where hard-to-train skills exist already. Next, Indiana's work force is located mostly within smaller and medium-sized cities rather than in very large and expensive metropolises. This makes it possible for firms to offer rather lower wages for these skills than would typically be paid. Companies usually see in the state of Indiana an opportunity to obtain higher than average skills at lower than average salary.
The state of Indiana is situated in the U.S. Corn Belt and Grain Belt. The state has a feedlot-style system raising corn to fatten hogs and cattle. Along with corn, soybeans are also a major cash crop. Its nearness to large urban centers, like for instance Indianapolis and Chicago, assure that specialty horticulture, dairying and egg production happen. Other crops include tomatoes, melons, mint, grapes, popping corn, and tobacco in the southern counties. Most of the original land was not prairie and had to be cleared of deciduous trees. Numerous parcels of woodland remain and support a furniture-making sector within the southern portion of the state.
