It was during the Oklahoma Land Rush in 1889 that the city was founded. A couple of years after that, Norman was incorporated. The University of Oklahoma has a student population of about 30,000, and a workforce of practically 11,000. The research programs of the campus contributed more than $277 million to the city's economy during 2009.

The central Oklahoma area became part of the US with the Louisiana Purchase during the year 1803. The United States Government moved the Creek Nation in the area currently known as Norman during 1832-1833. Creek Nation was one of five Native American tribes which the United States officially recognized via treaty. Before the American Civil War the US government started relocating the tribes to the state of Oklahoma.

The National Weather Center place is within the city of Norman in addition to several weather-and climate-related organizations. The NWC is part of a collaborative effort between the University of Oklahoma and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The city of Norman is a prime location for a planned National Weather Museum. The academic and public weather research activities in Norman have drawn several private meteorological companies, like Vieux and Associates, Inc., Weathernews Americas, Inc., Computational Geosciences, Inc., Weather Decision Technologies and WeatherBank, Inc.

The city of Norma is also home to several other public and private scientific ventures. The renewable energy sector includes the Oklahoma Geological Survey and the Oklahoma Renewable Energy Council. Bergey Windpower provides small wind turbines and SouthWest NanoTechnologies makes carbon nanotubes.

Other agencies and institutions contributing to the local economy comprise the Griffin Memorial Hospital, the Norman Regional health System and Norman public schools. Major companies include AT&T, Hitachi, Albon Engineering, Astellas Pharma Technologies, Xyant Technology, RiskMetrics Group, SITEL, Sysco Corporation and Office Max National Sales Center.
