The U.S. Army constructed the city of Fort Wayne during 1794, last in a series of forts located near the Miami Indian Village of Kekionga. It was built under the direction of American Revolutionary War statesman General "Mad" Anthony Wayne. The fort was named in Wayne's honor and was established at the confluence of the Maumee, St. Joseph and St. Mary's Rivers. Fort Wayne became a trading post for European settlers. In 1823, the village was platted and following the completion of the Erie and Wabash Canals, the region saw tremendous growth.
The Miami first nation established a settlement at Kekionga during the mid-17th century. The settlement was situated along the rivers Maumee, St. Joseph and St. Mary's. The village served the Miami nation and numerous other Algonquian tribes. It is projected by historians that about the year 1676, French missionaries and priests visited the Miami people as they were going home from a mission at Lake Michigan. During 1680, a letter was sent to the Governor-General of Canada from Sieur de La Salle, Rene-Robert Cavelier, stating that he too had stopped there. The traders from France established a post in the 1680s, as it was the crucial portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River.
Fort Wayne developed into a major manufacturing hub in the mid 20th century. Certain employers including Magnavox, General Electric, Westinghouse and International Harvest were essential in the local economy. Moreover, Essex Wire, Rea Magnet Wire and Phelps Dodge made the largest concentration of copper wire production within the globe in the Second World War.
