It is surrounded by various Texas communities; Addison to the east, Farmer's Branch to the south and Coppell to the west. Carrollton City is technically a suburb of Dallas and as such is considered a part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The Texas State Highways 121 and 190 also service Carrollton City.

The name of Carrollton, is believed to have come from Carrollton, Illinois, which was the birthplace of the cities earliest settlers. Carrollton, Texas was initially settled during the year 1840 and was officially incorporated by the year 1913. In the beginning it was exclusively an agricultural community, but when the railway lines ran through the city during the year 1888 it became a shipping center for livestock, grain, gravel, cotton and cottonseed. Carrollton City grew considerably at the end of WWII World War II and was later enhanced by the surplus of individuals arriving from North Dallas.

Because of it's central location and business cost advantages, the city of Carrollton could attract a wide variety of different companies. Over five thousand businesses are located in the city of Carrollton with the majority of them being involved with manufacturing, construction and wholesale trades, insurance, real estate or finance.

The city of Carrollton has among the highest park land per capita within the area with over 1,230 acres of developed park land. For its residents, the city provides various amenities, comprising two recreation centers, two swimming facilities, a senior center, homestead museum, tennis center, and an amphitheater. There are some playgrounds, playing fields, biking and hiking trails, and picnic areas littered all through the city. Carrollton boasts two of the top municipal golf courses within the state.

The city's economy is kept relatively stable with a largely diversified economic base. In the labor force, there are now more than 71,000 people. The city of Carrollton is home to many small business enterprises, which creates an entrepreneurial community.

Within Carrollton City; there are various world class museums and art galleries, an opera, a theater, a ballet and a symphony. Sixty acres are devoted entirely to the Dallas Arts District, making it the biggest downtown arts district within the United States.

In a 100-mile radius are approximately 100 private and public golf courses and over fifty different lakes.

There are some unique boutiques within Carrollton City which sell an eclectic variety of gifts. As well, there are more than twenty five major shopping malls and 30 antique districts situated within Carrollton City. There are likewise some malls nearby, like for example Stonebriar Mall, the Dallas Galleria, and The Shops at Willow Bend. Additionally, the 1.9 million square foot Grapevine Mills Outlet mall is located nearby.
