The region that comprised Milwaukee was initially established by 3 different men in 1833 and 1834. The 3 townships were incorporated as the City of Milwaukee in the year 1846. The name of the city came from the Indian word "Millioke." Depending on the interpretation, the word for Milwaukee means "pleasant or beautiful lands," "gathering place by the water," or "the good land."

The very first Europeans to pass through the region were French fur traders and missionaries who passed into the area known as present day Milwaukee. The French-Canadian explorer, Solomon Juneau settled in the area during the year 1818. During 1846, the town of Juneau along with 2 nearby towns and became incorporated as Milwaukee. During the 1840s, plenty of immigrants such as Germans helped increase the population of Milwaukee during that time and the decades after.

The city of Milwaukee was at one time recognized as a manufacturing and brewing powerhouse. With the decline of business in a lot of of the states, the city's image has changed. There have been lots of new additions to the economy in the past decade. For instance, the Milwaukee Art Museum is now home to Miller Park, which is a globally well-known addition to the museum. The Milwaukee Riverwalk, Pier Wisconsin and Frontier Airlines Center are among the newest developments. There has been a remarkable increase within the construction of apartments, lofts and condominiums, along with skyscrapers being built within the neighborhoods near the lakefront and the riverbanks.

Due to 4 of the biggest breweries within the globe located in the city, Milwaukee was initially recognized as a beer township. These four breweries comprise Pabst, Miller, Blatz and Schiltz. Presently, only Miller remains within Milwaukee. Milwaukee is still a huge manufacturing community. About over 20 percent of the population is working within manufacturing operations.
