It has the largest population compared to any province, while being the 2nd biggest in area. Canada's most heavily populated city is Toronto and the country's capital city Ottawa is likewise located here.
Along the western border of the province of Ontario is Manitoba, while Quebec is on the eastern border, with Hudson Bay located to the north. Towards the south, there are 3 U.S. States. From west to east these are the states of Minnesota, Michigan and New York. Across Lake Erie are Ohio and Pennsylvania. The majority of the province's 2,700 km or 1,677 mile border along with the USA follow inland waterways except for a small section. The Lake of the Woods is along the west, eastward there are the major lakes and rivers that make up the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River drainage system.
Ontario's drainage system is formed by many waterways, which include the Rainy River, the Pigeon River, Lake Erie, Lake Superior, Lake Huron, St. Mary's River, Lake St. Clair, lake Ontario, the St. Clair River, the Niagara River and the Detroit River. The boundary also flows along the St. Lawrence River from Kingston, Ontario to the Quebec boundary situated just east of Cornwall, Ontario.
Ontario is normally subdivided into two distinct areas: Southern Ontario and Northern Ontario. Most of Ontario's population and its arable land are situated in the south. Conversely, the northern three-quarters of the province are sparsely populated.
The name of the province is from Lake Ontario. This is thought to originate from a Huron word "Ontari:io," which means "great lake." Some people believe it is possibly originates from the word "skanadario" that translates to "beautiful water," in the Iroquoian languages. There are approximately two hundred fifty thousand freshwater lakes in the province of Ontario.
In 2004, more than half or approximately 52% of all manufacturing completed within the nation were made within the Province of Ontario. Michigan, the US state is the biggest trading partner. The Ontario government posted a record C$21.3 billion or $21.7 billion USD deficit for the fiscal year of 2009-10. The net debt of the province of Ontario could rise to C$220 billion in 2010-11 or a record of 37 percent of the GDP or gross domestic product.
The province of Ontario has a rich hydroelectric capacity with its river and its share of the Niagara River. The Ontario Power Generation produced seventy percent of the electricity of the province during the year 2009. Of this electricity, ten percent is fossil fuel derived, thirty nine percent is hydroelectric and 31% is nuclear. A large part of the newer power generation coming online during the past few years is combined cycle natural gas or natural gas plants. Ontario Power Generation is not responsible for the transmission of power since this responsibility falls under the control of Hydro One.
Originally the dominant industry, agriculture occupies a small percentage of the population. It is still prevalent in part of Southern Ontario's land proximity. In the past few decades, the number of individual farms has steadily decreased. Greater mechanization has helped satisfy the increasing demands that come with an increasing population. This ratio has also led to a slow increase in the amount of land reserved for growing crops.
