The city's two biggest employers are the state of Arizona and the U.S. military. Numerous local people are working at Luke Air Force Base within the west suburbs of Phoenix. Arizona State University is an asset to the city and is responsible for growing research capacities.

Before, Phoenix was dependent on five resources known as the "5Cs": cattle, climate, copper, citrus and cotton. The economy has diversified from its five traditional resources to incorporate a significant high-tech and telecommunications sectors. Intel has a big Phoenix labor force, consisting of roughly 10,000 individuals. Intel makes computer chips in water fabrication plants, some of which are located in the valley. The headquarters of Honeywell's Aerospace division are within the city of Phoenix, and many of Honeywell's avionics and mechanical facilities are situated within the metro area. Seven Fortune 500 companies are located in Phoenix: Allied Waste, Apollo Group, Avnet, Freeport-McMoRan, PetSmart and Pinnacle West.

The cornerstone of the city's tourism and recreational industries is the sport of golf. The warmer winter weather condition patterns help to attract golfers from colder climates.
