South Bend, Indiana gets its name as its location along the southernmost bend of the St. Joseph River. The city serves as the county seat for St. Joseph County. The population of the city is roughly 101,168 while the population of its Metropolitan Statistical Area is about 316,663. The population of the Combined Statistical area is 544,582. The city is considered Michiana Region's economical hub and is the 4th biggest city in Indiana State. Notre Dame, Indiana is situated just to the north and hosts the University of Notre Dame.

The economy of South Bend is fairly diverse with much in the areas of wholesale and retail trade, education, healthcare, and government. South Bend's biggest employer is the city of Notre Dame. Hence, education has a major effect on South Bend's economy. Local companies have partnered with the university to further research and development on some projects. The 2nd biggest employer within South Bend is the Memorial Health System. Some other medical related businesses are situated within the city.

Another industry that plays a big role in the economy is manufacturing. Non-electrical machinery, transportation equipment, rubber products, and plastic products are just some of the manufacturing sectors. AM General, the corporation that produces special purpose and Hummer military vehicles, has its headquarters within the city. It is one of the biggest employers in South Bend.

In the year 1842, the University of Notre Dame was established by Very Rev. Edward Sorin, C.S.C and six Catholic brothers. Since then, the university has become an essential part of the city's culture and economy.

More than 114 years of automotive history is housed at the Studebaker National Museum. The collection showcases all of the Studebaker products, ranging from the family`s early Conestoga Wagon all the way to the very last automobile that the company produced. During the year 1922, the Morris Performing Arts Center was opened. It has just been renovated and is presently home to the Broadway Theatre League as well as the South Bend Symphony Orchestra. The South Bend Regional Museum of Art is located downtown within Century Center. It was established in the year 1996 and is home to over 850 pieces of work from different regional artists.
