A group of prospectors known as the Four Georgians, discovered gold during the year 1864, within a gulch of the Prickly Pear Valley. The discovery of gold led to the founding of a camp called "Last Chance". The population quickly grew to over 200 and during the fall of the year 1846 a group of local men met to establish a proper township, including the plan of streets and the election of commissioners. Eventually, the committee chose a new name, Helena. Helena has an historic downtown district with street names that evoke the gold rush era, like "Last Chance Gulch", the name of the main street.

Helena has enjoyed some economic stability over the years because it serves as the state capital. The federal, county and state government jobs offer a lot of jobs for the cities inhabitants. Nearly 33 percent of the city's labor force is made up of government positions. Helena is situated within an area rich in silver and lead deposits, and mining is still a major industry with mineral processing plants situated throughout the city.
