Provo is situated along the Wasatch Front, that is a long chain of cities and towns situated towards the west of the Wasatch mountains. The city of Provo serves as the county seat of Utah County and the principal city in the Provo-Orem metropolitan area population of 526,810. It is the 3rd largest metro area in Utah State after the city of Salt Lake and Ogden-Clearfield.
Etienne Provost, a French-Canadian explorer, named the region after visiting in the year 1825. During the latter part of the 1840s, Mormons created a community in the city of Provo, that was later incorporated in 1849. Because of its abundance of fruit gardens and orchards, Provo was known as the "Garden City". Brigham Young Academy was founded in Provo during the year 1875. Later on, the academy became Brigham Young University (or also called BYU), the largest church-affiliated university within the US. The university has been extremely essential to Provo. They have been growing together, supporting a local high-technology business and nationally important academic and sports courses.
Provo hosts several local celebrations, the largest of which is America's Freedom Festival. It is one of the biggest celebrations of American Independence within the nation, with more than 30 events taking place during 21 days prior to and including the 4th of July. The Stadium of Fire Spectacular is the peak event, held at BYU's Cougar Stadium. A different main celebration is the yearly WinterFest, a series of events starting with the December Christmas Parade within downtown Provo and ending with a Firework Finale on the Eve of New year.
The economy of the Provo area is diversified. The region has many software technology businesses. Software companies located within the Provo region such as the prominent Symantec, Corel and Novell, Inc. Among the high tech companies situated within the area are Covergys, Ameritech Library Services, PowerQuest Corp., Micron technology, Folio Corporation, Viewsoft and Nimbus manufacturing. The region also has many biotech firms.
