During the year 1702, Mobile was established and was later incorporated as a city in 1819. Mobile came under several changes of rule during the prevailing years. At first, the establishment ruled as French Louisiana's capital until the British assumed control during the year 1763. In the American Revolution, the Spanish seized the city, and during the 1812 war, the US took over. During the Civil War, the city of Mobile was part of the Confederacy and survived a blockade by Union Naval forces. For 50 years, Mobile's proximity near a big international seaport increased its fortunes. The shipment of cotton was its main industry. These days the local economy is dominated by the aerospace, chemical, maritime and petroleum industries. Tourism is also a significant business.
The city of Mobile has a strong economic base in the sectors of research and medicine, retail trade, aerospace, construction and manufacturing. Mobile businesses produce engines, aircraft, wood pulp and paper, chemicals, paint, aluminum, cement, rayon fibres, pumps and ship-related items. The city of Mobile benefits from its worldwide seaport, the Port of Mobile. Numerous steamship lines serve the port. Mobile is home to the Brookley Complex, a Foreign Trade Zone with more than 100 companies. Aerospace companies such as Mobile Aerospace Engineering are situated here. Many local inhabitants are employed at Mobile Aerospace Engineering, the biggest private employer in the city of Mobile.
