The Fayetteville area was settled during 1739 by Scottish immigrants. Two early settlements, Campbellton and Cross Creek, converged during the year 1783 to be able to create Fayetteville City. It was named to honor a Revolutionary War hero, the Marquis de Lafayette. Previously the capital of North Carolina (1789-1793), the city of Fayetteville lost out to Raleigh in its efforts to become the permanent state capital. Fayetteville City endured obstacles twice through its history, once in 1831 when The Great Fire destroyed a lot of the city, comprising the original State House. Then again, during the Civil War, the city of Fayetteville was destroyed by General Sherman's Union troops when they burned the Confederate arsenal there. Despite these tragedies a lot of structures have been preserved within Fayetteville's historic districts.
Fort Bragg employs many people, with an impact of this United States Army installation's economic activity in the many billions each year. The city's financial system is also greatly dependent on manufacturing. There are businesses which manufacture tools, tires and automotive products. Other major employment sectors are health care, education, accommodation, food services, government and construction.
The Fayetteville labor force comprises many previous military employees. Many of the city's jobs require a college degree such as teachers, registered nurses, manufacturing and wholesale sales representatives, computer specialists, human and social service assistants, education administrators, management analysts and social workers. The civilian population works primarily in four employment categories: sales and office professions, professional and related occupations, business, financial and management and transportation, material moving and production jobs.
