U.S. Route 281 and Texas State HIghway 107 are two other main highways that serve the area. The Miller International Airport is the nearest airport to the city, which provides flights to Dallas, Mexico City and Houston, and several other places in the region.

The city was initially established as West McAllen by John McAllen in the year 1904. A different group of developers established East McAllen soon after and they merged together during 1911 when McAllen City was incorporated. The Free Trade Zone which was implicated during the 1970's led to the quick growth of industrial trade and manufacturing. More jobs were created in the 1990's when the North American Free Trade Agreement passed. The city has become home to several national companies over the last three decades and is considered the regional leader in commerce and government.

Amongst the most fascinating facilities within the city is the International Museum of Art and Science. Various different exhibits are held during the year, including a Mexican arts and craft exhibit within the North Gallery, a long term exhibit of dinosaur tracts at the Earth Science Gallery, and a working meteorological display. Located at the Museum of South Texas History are several artifacts and exhibits cataloging the complete history of Southern Texas, including Spanish exploration and colonization, early ranching an farming, the Mexican War and Rio Grande Steamboat era. The Quinta Mazatlan, the McAllen Wing of the World Birding Center, caters to nature lovers. Their only objective is to preserve the 1930's adobe estate and the native animals and plants from the area. The Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge houses numerous animals, birds, and waterfowl from around the Rio Grande Valley. The Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park provides over five hundred acres of woodlands for ambitious picnickers, hikers and campers.

Within the Rio Grande Valley, there are three regional sports teams located here. The Edinburg Coyotes are an independent minor league baseball team based out of Edinburg. From Hidalgo comes the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, a professional ice hockey team. Also from Hidalgo are the Rio Grande Valley Dorados, that is a professional football team.
