The city of Juneau went through three name changes. The city of Juneau has served as the state capital ever since the year 1906, at which time the state capital was in Sitka. At present, the largest employer within the city is the state, federal and local governments. Numerous residents are employed by the state government, municipal government or federal government. The airport, harbors, hospital, school district and the University of Alaska are all operated by the government. Approximately 25% of the economy of Juneau is dependent directly and indirectly on state government offices.
On a seasonal basis, tourism contributes significantly to the local economy. Between May and September, approximately one million guests are brought to the city of Juneau via cruise ships. These guests generally stay in the city of Juneau just for a short time, up to around 11 hours.
Initially, the fishing industry was the main industry of the area. Those days saw a lot of halibut schooners operating within the region. The fishing industry continues to be vital to the local economy. The city of Juneau is considered the 45th most lucrative US fisheries port by value and 49th by volume. The shellfish and fish caught here is valued at around 20 million dollars yearly.
