John C. Williams and Peter Demens co-founded the city of Petersburg. Williams obtained the land during 1876, and Demens helped bring the railroad there during 1888. St. Petersburg became a city officially during the year 1892, with a population of 300 inhabitants.
Situated on Tampa Bay, the city of St. Petersburg enjoys a tropical type of weather, allowing the city to pack the year with numerous outdoor events. Over 1,000 thousand outdoor activities are held here every year, most taking place along the preserved downtown waterfront area. Festivals include American Stage in the Park, the Cajun/Zydeco Crawfish Festival, Earth Day's Green Thumb Festival, the Art Arbor Nature Crafts Festival, and lots more. The music and art is nearly constant as the streets and parks of the city fill with people. The city is also the site of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, an Indycar series car race.
St. Petersburg's downtown Central Business District is full of office high rises like the Bank of America Tower. Downtown dining is situated on Central Avenue and nearby streets, and on Beach Drive. Several clubs, bars and lounges could be found around and along Central Avenue with entertainment to suit any taste. Jannus Landing and the State Theatre are two well-known concert venues. The St. Petersburg Times newspaper has its head office in the Central Business District.
There are many fine galleries and theatres in the Central Business District, such as the Mahaffey Theater complex, that has a glass-enclosed atrium which overlooks the waterfront. The multi-use facility, The Coliseum, has the finest ballroom within the south. There are numerous famous art collections: Chihuly Collection presented by the Morean Arts Center, Salvador Dali Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, the Florida International Museum, and the Holocaust Museum. Dozens of various galleries and cultural places can be found downtown and on the border.
